Certificate of commission granted to Stephen Decatur as captain of the ship Royal Louis, 23 Aug. 1781.

Text reads in full: "This is to certify all whom it may concern, that a commission hath been granted to Stephen Decatur bearing date the twenty third day of July last, for the ship called the Royal Louis mounting twenty two carriage guns of the burthen of one hundred tons navigated by two hundred men, and belonging to Francis Gurney and others of the city of Philadelphia merchants."
